Benson Pony Express Western Days
Organizers are expecting a grand turnout Saturday for Benson Pony Express Western Days at Lions Park with an array of activities lined up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The roster includes a car show, tractor pulls, antique engine displays, car swap meet, kids’ activities, including Tigger of Winnie the Pooh fame, DJ and live music by Dave Owens Band, craft, food vendors, raffles, wagon rides with oxen Jim and Roland, kiddie train rides and historical re-enactments by San Pedro Posse.
That’s according to Benson Beautification who is putting on the event. The Pony Express mail delivery route to Dragoon Post Office will highlight festivities. The seven horse and rider teams will depart from the Post Office at the park for the 21-mile delivery route to Dragoon Post Office east of Benson. Mail receptacles are available at Benson, Pomerene, St. David and Tombstone post offices for anyone who’d like their mail delivered via Pony Express.
“People can now put their already stamped letters and cards into the boxes and we will pick them up before Sept. 22… all correspondence will be carried via Pony Express to Dragoon,” said Allen, president of Benson Beautification.
Commemorative stamps read “This letter was carried by actual Pony Express 21 miles from Benson to Dragoon” will be available for purchase at the event, along with commemorative envelopes and stationary.
Proceeds from some of the 50/50 raffle will benefit Benson High School Future Farmers of America while the “general raffle” benefits Benson Beautification, the organization behind the murals in Benson.
